- Jun 12, 2011 Pain relief: Suffering from what was diagnosed
as an impinged shoulder, the prescribed physical therapy did nothing to
improve my condition or relieve my pain and may have worsened my
condition. Shoulder and arm mobility declined with each passing day,
down to about 30%. In one session, Daniel Carr was able to free the
impingement and brought mobility back to 60%. By the end of the second
session, mobility was back to 98%. He advised doing yoga and chi kung
exercises to restore full range of motion, keep the joint strong and
prevent recurrence of the injury. I am firmly convinced that if Daniel
had not work on my shoulder, it would now be frozen-stiff and I would be
in a world-of-hurts instead of resuming all my normal activities. This
excellent outcome came as no surprise since Daniel has resolved several
structural issues for me over the years. My first experience was the
result of receiving "the ugly-shoe death sentence" from the doctor.
Years of wearing high-heels gave me bunions. Now I was developing a
painful hammer toe (the toe involuntarily contracts sharply at the joint
and the tip of the toe points down) for which the only non-surgical
solution offered by my doctor was orthopedic shoes. Unwilling to accept
this as my fate, I searched for another answer. A friend suggested I
check Daniel's website and I decided to contact him. Daniel was very
honest, saying he didn't know if he could help me, but he was willing to
try. Cut to the chase; after a few sessions, my toe was no longer
contracted and I am still able to wear pretty shoes, 3.5 years later.
After this first experience, I became a devotee. I have every confidence
that whatever the physical problem, Daniel can resolve it and he has
never let me down. Daniel's work is advertised as Thai massage but it is so very much more. Don't expect a "feel good" spa-type massage.
His technique is therapeutic in nature and often involves work on
deep-tissue and nerves. Daniel brings a lot to the party: knowledge of
yoga, martial arts, and healing arts; in-depth understanding of the
structural aspects of the body; spot-on evaluation of the underlying
physical condition causing your current problem; and the skill to
correct the problem. An important thing I learned from Daniel is that
seemingly insignificant injuries over the years can compound and cause
serious skeletal/muscular problems later in life. He will ask if I ever
had this injury or that injury because he can feel the lingering
aftereffects; it never ceases to amaze me that my answer is always
"yes." Lastly, a comment about Daniel, the individual. He is, without a
doubt, the most profound and ethical practitioner that I have
encountered in any field. Daniel completes the required work in the
fewest number of sessions to economize for his clients. He offers advice
on exercises to give you self-help options to maintain his work and
perhaps save you the cost of additional sessions. My only regret is that
Daniel relocated to southern CA. While he does make trips back to San Francisco, it is comforting to know that Daniel is just a short plane ride away should I ever urgently need his help.
- Jun 5, 2011 I had chronic pain in my neck and
shoulder from a sports related injury 15 years ago. The pain escalated
to the point that I had trouble sleeping through the night. I went to
Dan and the first treatment gave me immediate relief. The treatment
involved breaking up scar tissue and was painful, but as soon as I stood
up I could feel the difference. My range of motion was better and I
felt relief. After a few subsequent treatments I feel like my range of
motion is as good as the non-injured shoulder and I no longer feel pain
there. Dan knows exactly what he is doing and I can't recommend him
highly enough.
- Jun 4, 2011 i injured both of my shoulders playing soccer and
couldn't lift either of my arms without tremendous pain. I went to a
number of doctors and physical therapists and months later, my injuries
felt just as severe. It was extremely depressing to think that I was
going to have to live with this pain for what seemed like forever. Then a
friend recommended me to Dan. The word that comes to mind is
astonishing. The degree to which my injuries have healed is simply
unbelievable. I can't think of any other way to describe it...Do
yourself a favor....don't waste your time with anyone else in LA. Go see
Dan...
- Jun 3, 2011 After I graduating from college two years ago ,
I was suffering from tremendous pain. Almost every part of my body was
affected by pain: my legs, hips, buttocks, back, neck, and arms. I had
really abused myself at a pretty incompetent martial art school where
the instructors made us do some very self-destructive practices. In
fact, one time a teacher stood on me as I was stretching and tore
numerous muscles that never healed properly. I went to several
specialists to deal with the problem: neurologists, rheumatologists, and
neurosurgeons. None of them were able to help me since all my tests
came back negative, and it was suggested that I see a psychiatrist
since, according to their tests, there was no reason for me to have
pain. Luckily after much desperation, I found my old Kung Fu and Kick
Boxing teacher, Daniel Carr. I had studied Muay Thai, the
Thailand style of kick boxing, with Daniel long before my bad experience
in martial arts and turned to him for guidance on how to cope with this
situation. He had always done bodywork at his studio on students, but I
hadn't really understood how much he knew about healing until I
contacted him last year. The first time I saw him, he immediately told
me that I could regain my life again and that the doctors did not
understand what had happened to me. I doubted him at first, but not any
more. Although I am not completely pain free, I am remarkably better
thanks to Dan's Thai Massage. I used to suffer from so much pain
and my muscles used to be so stiff that even walking was a difficult
task. I am a very active person, having studied martial arts off and on
for eight years and participated in all sport activities, so not being
able to be physically active was very difficult for me. I am now
physically active again in ways that I never thought possible two years
ago. Dan introduced me to Tai Chi and Yoga, both of which I practice on a
daily basis since they help me cope with pain and greatly improve my
quality life. Dan is very knowledgeable and is much more then just a
masseuse: as far as I can tell, he is one of the foremost experts in the
USA in Kung Fu and Tai Chi and is incredibly versed in Muay Thai
and in a variety of powerful Hatha Yogic practices. I highly recommend
Daniel Carr and I am forever grateful for all the help his Thai Massage he has given me.
- Jun 2, 2011 I found Daniel when I was searching for sciatica
solutions in 2005. Thank you Internet because I Daniel's commitment to
chronic pain and eastern solutions was an interesting combination on his
web site. Anyone that has experienced serious lower back pain knows....
you'll do anything. In one session, he worked me over to where I no
longer needed muscle relaxants or anti-inflamatories to get through a
day at work. He followed-up with me the next day to see how I felt. I
admitted I was bruised, but all the pain was gone. He recommended some
yoga. I've seen him about once a year ever since... when my back gets
twisted from stress. Most recently I had been experiencing leg cramps
that would wake me up in my sleep. I went in for 90 minutes of full-body
work and discovered it was my sciatic nerve misbehaving. Daniel worked
me over and I'm "cured" again. I can't recommend the guy enough. He
knows his stuff and most importantly, he cares.
- Jun 2, 2011 A Fix For Chronic Pain! For anyone out there with chronic pain problems, you must try Daniel Carr of San Francisco Thai Massage
also servicing Los Angeles. After years of chronic back pain and the
failure of doctors, orthopedic specialists, physical therapists and
medication to deal with my problems I visited Dan Carr for his diagnosis
and help. After just a few sessions of his specialized Thai massage,
my problems were cured! No more daily pain and no need to take
medication. It just makes you a "new" person not to have to deal with
chronic pain. Daniel is a martial arts instructor (Kung Fu and Mui Thai) who is practiced in yoga, taichi, and thai massage.
He has combined his extensive knowledge of these disciplines with his
extensive knowledge of human musculature and nervous systems into a
unique brand of massage that is actually physical therapy as opposed to the typical spa massage.
There is pain involved in receiving his treatments but it is worth
every moment to end up being freed of chronic pain. I have several
friends who have been treated by Daniel for everything from joint (knee,
ankle and wrist) pain, sciatica, foot pain, frozen shoulders, and even
mygraines. His ability to heal is truly amazing! Daniel's
professionalism and easy going personality makes the whole experience a
great one! I cannot recommend him enough for anyone who wants to rid
themselves of body pain of any kind. I have continued to be chronic pain
free for over 2 years now. I have had the luxury of followup visits
with Dan every few months and while not essential, the additional
treatments are great in enhancing my well being.
- May 30, 2011 I will keep this simple. My brother treated me to a thai massage
session with Daniel Carr while I was visting him in Santa Monica. I
live in the New York area. In that one session, Dan relieved more
chronic pain and constrictions affecting my motion and posture than all
the "treatments" from doctors, chiros, masseurs, PT bucket shops and
trainers. Fair warning - this was the most painful treatment I have ever
endured and I have had a kidney stone that needed surgical extraction
for comparison but even while it was happening, I could feel it was
"healing" pain as I felt things being released that I had simply been
accepting as permanent - even congenital - constraints. I am busy
accumulating my airline points for another visit from New York to Dan as
soon as I can.
- May 25, 2011 Where Pain is really worth the GAIN have been to Thailand 11 times in the last 7 years and married a Thai masseuse - so i know a little bit about the healing properties of a good thai massage.
I have "fibromyalgia" and arthritis in my neck and shoulders and my
foot. My trip to thailand in 2007 i sought out "nerve specialists" and
they turned my world upside down and brought me a lot of relief.... but i
only had a few treatments and pain returned. None of this prepared me
for what Daniel could and still does do for me. Let me say that i have
passed kidney stones 3 times in my life and that was more fun that one
of Daniel's intense workovers. Nonetheless, i give him a full five
stars. Over a period of 3 months and about 8 treatments he has relieved
me of about 80% of active pain, almost off of all pain medications
now.... my foot arthritis pain is completely gone and shoulders and neck
only occassionally spasm. When i first went to see him - he said he
felt at least 3 major whiplash events in my body and that was the cause
of my current pain situation. I could not believe my ears!
Acupuncturists, chiropractors, physical therapists (all over a period of
2 years)- none had ever referenced my 3 car wrecks or suggested any
relationship between these incidents and my chronic pain. Daniel
correctly found the root cause and has been FANSTASTIC in fixing the
situation. I will see him a couple of more times before i go to thailand
for another month of relaxation and then that will be it. But if i ever
experience pain again from my "fibromyalgia" or arthritis - i know
where to go. Well, went to Thailand for a month, got several massages
from Daniel's teacher, was extremely intrigued by the blind master's
techniques and have returned to Daniel's care. I now wear shoes i could
never wear before (due to my foot arthritis), sleep well at night, have
NO pain during the day and have actually walked a couple of miles over
SFO hills - something i thought i would never do again. Pills are all
gone , pain is gone and i will be sorry to stop seeing Daniel. I know i
will get a "tune-up" now and again... but i also know that my body will
never forget the healing he has enabled me to experience. What more
could you ask for? I can't say enough about the man's personal
committment to healing and his integrity. Top marks all the way around.
And because of the way/what he treats, you may find yourself healing in
other ways too.... seeing him has been a life changing experience.
Update from Thailand, two years later. I have now lived in Chiang Mai
for almost 2 years and been getting massages whenever so inclined - hey,
at $10 for 2 hrs, i am inclined a lot! Anyways... i thought i would
mention that i have yet to find a massage in thailand as comprehensive or as healing as what Daniel gave me in San
Franciso. I am still free from pain around my original complaints -
Daniel gave me that freedom! But sometimes here, i get kinks or cramps
and i want them worked out. Off to massage. I have found two
people here that begin to approach the energy and strength that Daniel
brings, and only one, that seems to have a potential for technique. My
wife is thai, so she conveys to the masseuse what i need and
still, they fail to deliver like Daniel did. Daniel achieved a perfect
marriage of thai techniques, asian chi dynamics, basic body
health, and a deep understanding of nerve systems. Once again, i say
thank you , Daniel!
- Jan 20, 2010 Dan is a expert in his field. As
a longtime competitive kickboxer, I have accumulated a range of problem
areas in my body, from shoulders, to back, to legs. Recently, Dan had
an hour's time available for me, and he asked me to choose one area of
concentration. Because I have had recurring problems with upper back
nerve pain, associated with martial arts, I asked him to focus there.
Within ten minutes of analyzing my body, Dan found a knot of scar tissue
located near my collarbone that I did not realize was there from a fall
when I was a child. This fall, and not kickboxing, he said, was the
source of my problems. In an hour's time, Dan broke up the scar tissue,
and since that treatment I have been able to realize a new and different
range of motion in my neck, shoulders, and upper back, without any
return of pain. The difference pre- and post-treatment has been truly
dramatic. I have visited a range of skilled bodyworkers over the years,
complaining of the same issues with my neck and back. None had ever
found this scar tissue. Dan has a deep grasp of anatomy and physiology,
and an intuitive sense for bodywork. I can't wait for him to return to
the Bay Area so that I can have another treatment.
- Jan 24, 2009 As if I had discovered Lourdes... If
you are suffering from chronic pain, you owe it to yourself to contact
Daniel Carr. Perhaps by hearing my story, you will be encouraged to take
the first step towards recapturing a pain-free life. I have a chronic
condition that caused the loss of cartilage in my ankle joint. Over the
course of time, my mobility was severely impaired as my right ankle was
"bone-on-bone" accompanied by all the pain and swelling that phrase
suggests. Every single step was a struggle beyond belief, and I could no
longer sit or sleep without my ankle braced. Traditional western
medicine had reached its limits. My physician gave me two choices: take
more and stonger medication to dull the pain that grew increasingly
unbearable with each passing day or, have my ankle surgically and
permanently fused with no promise that even this drastic step would
relieve my pain. These choices were unacceptable to me and I searched
for another solution. This is what brought me to Daniel Carr. Daniel
used his considerable skills to realign muscles and tendons to restore
structural support in my leg and hold the leg bones above the
anklebones. Mere days after that first session, I could put weight on my
leg with minimal pain and had range of motion that I thought was lost
forever. With further weekly sessions, Daniel returned strength to the
atrophied muscles, reduced the swelling in my ankle, and increased the
circulation in my leg to the point that even my rheumatologist marveled
at my progress and asked what I had done to so dramatically improve my
condition in such a short period of time. His stated objective is to
"put himself out of work." True to his word, I now see Daniel once a
month as he works to realign and strengthen my knees and hips that have
been compromised by years of walking improperly to minimize the ankle
pain. I have not used the ankle brace at all. His bodywork technique is
very unique and draws from his vast knowledge of a variety of martial
arts, therapeutic Thai massage, Chinese medicine theories, and
yoga, as well as anatomy and physiology, to plan an effective course of
treatment for his clients. Daniel works with all of his clients with
care, kindness, and compassion. As necessary, he develops exercise
routines for his clients to enhance the bodywork, hasten the
rehabilitation process, and maintain the results of his good work.
Daniel conducts himself and his business in an extremely ethical manner
and with the highest level of integrity in thought, word, and deed.
Thanks to Daniel, my life has improved beyond measure. What he has done
for me is nothing short of miraculous, as I am now able to go about the
simple, daily tasks of life relieved of the pain that once immobilized
me. For this, I will be forever grateful to Daniel Carr.
